The Battle at Prince of Wales Fort - Churchill, Manitoba

On August 9, 1782, in a tent outside of the Prince of Wales Fort, the young boy listened to his anaana (mother) telling him about the story of the gifted shamans who live inside the earth and have the power to journey in trances and dreams. As the sun descends into the horizon, the sky grew darker, the entire peninsula fell into a slumber.

All of a sudden, lightning struck. The young boy found himself standing on top of the fortress.

“They are coming. We better get ready,” says another boy who is of a similar age standing next to him. Through the dark foggy clouds, the young boy can see three large ships coming towards the peninsula, their masts shiver in the wind, their hulls pushing against the current.

“Only if they can get through Qallupilluk!” The young boy replied with an unsettling voice.

Qallupilluk is this scaly and human-like creature that would jump out of the water and snatch children into the sea. As the ships anchored near the peninsula, they disembarked into boats and began heading towards the shoreline. The closer they get, the sky becomes foggier.

Finally, the boats slowly emerged out of the mist, crashed into the rocky shoreline. But there is no one to be seen.

The young boy woke up. The sun is rising in the horizon, the waves are crashing on the rocks. Prince of Wales Fort sits still and majestically.
